Condolences to Prof. Franz Ziegler, Professor Emeritus of Rational Mechanics at the TU Vienna, who passed away on January 4, 2016.

It’s very regrettable that Prof. Franz Ziegler has dead, January 4th, 2016. I noticed his death this morning. First of all, I would like to express my deep sympathy to his wife, Waltraud, and his pupils.

For me, he is irreplaceable one. At Crakow in 1999, we discussed a proposal for IUTAM symposium. He willingly took part as the co-chairman of 2002 IUTAM symposium in Yonezawa. Since then, he gave many advices and strong support for the symposium. Its success is fully owing to his support. Without him, the success might be impossible. I learned his world-wide friendship from his support and he naturally introduced his two big pupils, Profs. Hans Irschik and Rudolf Heuer. From them, I also learned the European way of respect from pupils to their mentor.

Professor Franz Ziegler is the most outstanding researcher in Solid Mechanics. His work field is very wide, from continuum mechanics to dynamics of solid media and vibration control. His distinguished textbook, “Mechanics of Silds and Fluids” in English and German, shows his wide knowledge. He has published more than 250 academic papers and delivered many invited lectures at congresses and others.

He has contributed to the development of scientific societies. He was the fellow of Austrian and Russian academies, ASME and others. He also worked as the Secretary General of International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) from 1992 to 1996. In his term, he established the new publication systems for the proceedings of the IUTAM symposium.

Professor Franz Ziegler is a very charming person and his favorite is Wine, dance and etc. Sometimes, his wife sent a sharp eye-sign for restrain. It’s a nice couple! Whenever I called him the “big” professor, he returned “tall” man. But, when I asked about research work, he explained very closely with leaning down (he is tall!). Last September, I met at the workshop in Vienna and talked about the higher mode excitation on the beam with a running load. I remember it as if it were a yesterday.

Professor Franz Ziegler is a true researcher. He kept his interest in the practical application and solved very practical problems based on the firm foundation of solid mechanics, but applying numerical schemes, such as FEM and BEM. It may be impossible to have the appearance of a wide-knowledge researcher, such as him, in the future. We missed him!

Condolences to Prof.Franz Ziegler

It is great sadness that Franz Ziegler, Professor Emeritus of Rational Mechanics at the TU Vienna passed away on January 4, 2016. This is a shocking news for me. I would like to offer our most heartfelt condolences to his wife, Dr. Waltraud Ziegler and his family.

It is the First International Symposium on Thermal Stresses and Related Topics (TS1995), Hamamatsu Japan on May 1955 that I met Professor Franz Ziegler for the first time. Three great scientists, Professor Ziegler, Professor Boley and Professor Hetnarski gathered TS1995. The International Congress on Thermal Stresses (TS congress) by which the three great scientists gathered became last first. He presented Dynamic Process in Structural Thermo-viscoelasticity as an invited lecture. This presentation was very impressive for all participants. He also enjoyed to play a drum (Japanese Taiko).

When I visited his laboratory in TU Vienna on August 1955, I received a strong impact from him. Former professors of his laboratory were two great scientists, Professor E. Melan and Professor H. Parkus in the fields of Thermal Stresses. From the discussion of the research with him, I got strong impression for the sincere attitude and passion to his research, deep and wide range of knowledge, the wide range of exchange of each country researchers and kind hospitality.

Professor Ziegler gave me and a Japanese research group many advices and strong supports for the research and the congresses. Professor Watanabe and Professor Ziegler organized IUTAM symposium on Dynamic of Advanced Materials and Smart Structure on May 2002 in Yonezawa. It was impressive event that the Japanese research group invited him and his wife, Dr. Waltraud Ziegler, and enjoyed his 65th birthday party. He also organized the 6th International Congress on Thermal Stresses, on May 2005 in Vienna. Many Japanese researches enjoyed the congress. He also invited me his 60th birthday symposium, Recent Advances in Mechanics of Solid and Fluids, TU Vienna on November 1997 and his 70th birthday symposium, Festkolloquium Recent Advances in Mechanics of Solid and Fluids, TU Vienna, on February 2008. I continuously had beautiful time with him in many congresses and symposiums. The 9th International Congress on Thermal Stresses, June 2011 in Budapest became last when I met him and his wife.

It is my important treasure that I met him and learned from him the sincere attitude and passion to the research, the exchange of each country researchers and the effort to the research community.

We missed him. Zigler’s outstanding effort to the community and his world-wide friendship will remain in our hearts all the time.

Please extend my deepest condolence to his wife, Dr. Waltraud Ziegler, his family and Franz’s colleagues.

With best regards,
